24 September 2015

September has long been one of my favorite months of the year. Football; cool evening walks; my birthday. Don’t get me wrong, I love the summer. I guess the only months I don’t like are January, February, and March but, I don’t think I’m alone there.

I honesty don’t know where I was going with that. Oh yea, football. Specifically, fantasy football. I’m obsessed with it. I’m basically Rick Smith or Thomas Dimitroff. I have four teams which is not at all obsessive. Not at all.

Anyway, here are some of the things I’ve been enjoying lately:

What I’m Reading:

Lock In by John Scalzi – So this book is incredible and pretty far from anything I have ever read or anything that I thought I would enjoy. So why did I check it out? Well, I heard about John Scalzi on Lifehacker’s How I Work blog. I’m always interested in how highly successful people perform.

That lead me to John’s blog Whatever. As I did some snooping, I found that not only has he written like 10 novels, updates his blog every day, and is a consultant to various companies, but he also recently signed a 13 book, 10 year book deal. Insane.

I’m rambling. ‘Lock In’ is a near future novel set in United States where much of the population has contracted a disease called Haden’s. The gist is that it causes a shift in brain function that causes Meningitis. A smaller group of Haden’s victims experience ‘Lock In’, which is when the brain is fully functioning but the body is paralyzed.

Scalzi creates a world of locked in citizens using bots or ‘Threeps’ to live in the outside world. In order to achieve this, they must plant an alternate network in the brain. And of course, like all technology, it can be compromised.

I can go on and on about this book. It’s badass. And Scalzi lives in Ohio, so we boys.

What I’m Watching:

Pitch Perfect – This flick is about what you would expect. Silly and hilarious. And I still don’t know if the singing and dancing is legit but if it is, it’s freaking impressive. Also, Anna Kendrick is super talented and really funny, so there’s that. Good, easy date-night movie.
